Taste of Addison

It's one of my favorite seasons of the year - outdoor festival and concert season! The weather in Texas is perfect for these activities right now so I try to take advantage as much as possible. Last weekend we spent the day at the Taste of Addison. It was a blast - live music, food tents, beer, carnival rides, games and the list goes on.

The city of Addison did a fantastic job keeping the grounds clean, bathroom lines short (with enough port-o-potties) and the whole experience extremely enjoyable.

Sometimes you just need to spend a day in the sun with a beer in your hand. Am I right or am I right?

Don't worry if you missed it, there are more coming up. The next big event is Kaboom Town in Addison on July 3rd. This will have fireworks, live music and plenty of food and drink. Hope I see you there!

Tornado Relief Options

May is always a nerve-racking time of year around here being at the end of Tornado Alley. It never fails, we get some extremely violent thunderstorms, tornado warnings and you need to have a game plan in the back of your mind in case they actually do head your way.

Here’s an even scarier thought, what do you do after something like that actually happens? What happens when your home is destroyed, pets are lost and you quite literally have to start all over?

Here are some things you can do to help people who are in that very situation right now:

1. Eat dinner at Cane Rosso in Deep Ellum. 100% of sales tonight (5/21/13) will be donated to the Red Cross.

2. Send a text that says REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10.

3. Buy yourself a new shirt through Shop Good. The proceeds will go to the relief effort in Moore, OK.

4. Donate much needed supplies to any Fellowship Church campus in DFW. Anything from bottled water and razors to diapers and baby blankets.

5. Pick the charity of your choice through Charity Navigator and find your own way to help.

Don't just sit there and read about it. Do something to help, you can spare a few extra dollars and a little of your time.

Torn Between Brisket and Beets

Earlier this spring, my wife and I wrapped up a Lent inspired 46-day vegetarian journey. We are both big believers in challenging oneself and often find that it will lead to some unexpected new appreciation or joy. But as a lifelong carnivore and BBQ aficionado, I wasn’t too sure of how cutting meat out of my diet was going to lead to nirvana.

It’s truly amazing how far the vegetarian movement has come in recent years. I feel like it wasn’t that long ago that the only vegetarian I knew was a friend of a friends neighbors wacky aunt. Now, I have both close friends and family who live by the code. Rather than run through boring daily accounts, I figured I’d keep it lean and hit on a few key personal discoveries…

You’d be surprised how few things are truly meatless. While the number of vegetarian friendly restaurants and groceries have gone up in recent years, it’s incredibly hard to find something at a Mexican restaurant that doesn’t include pork fat.

You don’t have to be a hipster to be a vegetarian: I know, I know, but it’s true. While I still believe there to be a much higher concentration of hipsters in the vegetarian community, you don’t have to own a Subaru and a Labradoodle to go veggie.

Just because it’s vegetarian doesn’t mean it’s healthy. “This soy sausage tastes like pork, contains no pork, but somehow has more fat than pork, WTF?” True story. Check out some of the options next time you’re at the grocery.

Vegetarians are creative: Just Google vegetarian recipes and see what they’ve come up with. You’ve probably eaten a vegetarian designed meal and not even known it!

It’s not cheap to eat vegetarian: If you really want to explore all that the vegetarian world has to offer, Wal-Mart is not where you’ll find it. Like most things in life, a few extra bucks are usually worth it.

Beans have a lot of carbs in them: Maybe I’m the only one who didn’t know this. But if you are watching your carbs, you have to take it easy on the beans. A single serving of black beans contains almost as many carbs as a slice of bread.

So, did I miss being able to order a burger or BBQ a brisket? Sure, but not nearly as much as I thought I would. And while I didn’t learn anything through this challenge that literally changed my life, I did once again prove my personal theory that even the slightest lifestyle change can be enough to spark an adventure. It’s so easy to get too comfortable and to a point where you stop trying new things. So, whether or not you want to give the veggie lifestyle a try, be sure to challenge yourself one way or another. I’ll bet you discover something pretty awesome!

Spring Rolls

You're going to love this recipe for spring rolls. Easy, fast and very healthy. Enjoy!

You will need:

  • Rice Paper
  • Carrots
  • Cilantro
  • Cucumber
  • Shrimp

What to do:

  • Drop the rice noodles in boiling water for 2 minutes. Drain them and spread them out on a plate to cool off.
  • Peel both the carrots and cucumbers and slice them into 3-4inch straws.
  • Whether you bough fresh or frozen shrimp, remove the tails.
  • Wash the cilantro and pull the leaves off the stems. (The stems are bitter and change the taste of the spring rolls).
  • Put a sheet of rice paper in water for 10 seconds and then lay it flat on a clean plate. Take a small handful of rice noodles and place them on one edge of the rice paper. Layer on a few straws of cucumbers and carrots, a couple leaves of cilantro and 3-4 shrimp.
  • Roll until all ingredients are covered, tuck in the sides and continue to roll like a tiny burrito. Voila!

Atlas Genius

I really enjoy the vibe that Atlas Genius has going. These guys deliver straight forward Indie Rock that is enjoyable and easy to listen to. Their debut album takes on the sound of an early Coldplay mixed with Phoenix, but this is just my assessment, you may have a completely different experience, as the overall tone on the album varies greatly from song to song.

Atlas Genius is a Duo from Adelaide, Australia that consists of vocalist and guitarist Keith Jeffery and his brother Michael Jeffery on drums. The brothers took an unconventional path when starting out their musical career. Most bands follow a simple formula:

  1. Write music
  2. Play music anywhere you can (dive bars, high school parties, whatever it takes to get people to               notice you.)
  3. If people are interested enough you record your music
  4. Sell the music at your shows and hope to get picked up by a label.

But not these brothers. They built a studio where they could write and record music before they even played their first live show as Atlas Genius. Risky plan, but it seems to be paying off. You can check out their music here on the band’s soundcloud page.
